Institute of Applied Computer Science of Lodz University of Technology as a leader of consortium created with NETRIX S.A. and Institute of the Polish Mother's Memorial Hospital  implements a research project entitled: "A system of non-invasive monitoring and diagnosis of functional disorders of the lower urinary tract by means of electric and ultrasound tomography", under the Smart Growth Operational Programme 2014-202 measure 4.1 / sub-measure 4.1.4 "Application projects" co-financed by the European Union under the European Regional Development Fund.

Contract number: POIR.04.01.04-00-0045/20

The aim of the project is to develop and implement into clinical practice a system of non-invasive monitoring and diagnosis of functional disorders of the lower urinary tract in children using electrical impedance tomography (EIT) and ultrasound (UT) one.

Lower urinary tract disorders are a common problem in the pediatric population.  It is estimated that they can affect more than 20% of children under the age of 5 and up to 2-4% of teenagers. Functional disorders can be associated with many urinary tract defects, constipation, central nervous system defects (spina bifida, cerebral palsy); however, a significant number of children suffering only from functional disorders.

The lack of non-invasive diagnostic methods of functional and comprehensive analysis of the condition of the lower urinary tract reduces the likelihood of correct diagnosis and effective treatment, which can also increase the number of children treated without an apparent clinical problem.

The designed system will require the development of innovative models of the micturition process in children based on data provided by the measuring part. Physical 3D models simulating processes occurring in the lower urinary tract will be developed and made. They will allow a deeper understanding of urinary tract dysfunction and more effective diagnostics.

The system will allow to define diagnostic normative profiles for healthy children with age adjustment. An integral part of the system will be the diagnostic database and the diagnostic support module based on it using Big Data technologies and computational intelligence methods.

The final version of the system will be implemented in clinical practice, where it will be used in the diagnosis of diseases of selected groups of children with established urinary tract dysfunction.
